luishouse I have similar hinge. It wasn't difficult to remove the paint, IF you have the time. I removed the hinges, and using a hammer and centerpunch, I was able to remove most of the paint by tapping the hinge. You'd be surprised how easily layers of paint flake off. I then used a scouring pad to remove any little bits that were hard to get to (mostly on the ball for the pin). I finished with flat black spray paint. Overall looks good, but I'm sure painting them is a lot faster. Good luck.
It is really difficult to see detail of the handles in this photo, but I believe Deltana's cabinet pulls are very similar if not identical. These pulls are available in 9 different finishes, you can view them here: http://bld.cm/ML5S8U.
do you prefer exposed hardware hinges like shown here vs. hidden inside? - i typically like it -- more "homey" -- but sometimes it can look too busy... »
Steven Miller Design Studio, Inc. Blanket answers do not suffice. This was a design decision that was made to create more of a counterpoint to the contemporary "overlay" cabinets with concealed hinges at the island and family room.
joyharais i understand completely that it's dependent on the period look, how it influences the rest of the design elements in kitchen, and the overall feel. I truly hope i wasn't implying that i thought this particular design looked too busy. I'm a graphic designer and muralist, not an interior designer. My home was destroyed last fall in the Texas fires and so i'm rebuilding and trying to do things economically by using my own design sense (which may not be worth much) so thus, was just inquiring about others' opinions. Hope i did not offend. thanks.
Dear Steven Miller,
I really love this kitchen and was wondering if you would be able to share the white cabiner colour used as well as the island countertop colour/manufacturer.
Thank you kindly »
Steven Miller Design Studio, Inc. The perimeter cabinets are Wood-mode's standard "white" finish and the Island counter is Caesar Stone's "blizzard" (3141)
David Carreau It's a GFRC concrete folded down. We use it on our projects. We can fold it down up to 6". The true thickness is 3/4". Its designed to go over existing countertops without tear out. You can change the color later on too. 1day job.
Lyn Keyes Are the island cabinets Bamboo and are they from Wood Mode as well? Love how you blended shaker style with the even more contemporary island cabinetry.
Where is the hardware on the white cabinets from and what color/style are they? - We are remodeling our kitchen as an interim before we can do something pictured here and we have to install offset hinges in order for the doors to function properly. I like the look of the knobs and pulls! Can you share the brand and style and color pictured? Thanks!!! »
Believe it or not, there can be such a thing as too much counterspace. When it happens it's most often seen in the L-shaped kitchen layout. In this kitchen, hutch-style cabinets on the countertop solve this problem, add to the aesthetic, and create additional storage. This solution also cuts down on the clutter that can appear when there's too much counterspace outside of the main work triangle.
Filling a kitchen with contrasting cabinetry finishes is also in vogue. If you like the idea of mixing metals but aren't sure where to start, consider selecting a different metal to complement each cabinet type. For example, in this kitchen oil-rubbed-bronze knobs and hinges pop against the white cabinetry, while brushed-nickel pulls outfit the walnut island.
L-Shaped KitchensOne of today's more popular kitchen layouts, the L shape with a central island is great for today's multipurpose kitchens. Although this layout works best with plenty of space, its variations makes it an easy fit for almost any style. Read the guide: Ideas for L-Shaped KItchens

Also hutch-style may be good for taking the weighted load off walls that cannot support wall-hung cabinetry.
