motherbear I would think that it is purposely aged steel panels. The aging process would hopefully have been arrested & the panels somehow sealed.

I love how this house has an underneath room that pens to the out of doors. I was thinking of building a house with the garage underneath like this but this is so cool. Also a star observation roof on top of this would work really well.
