The owner is a frequent traveller. That’s why, he felt the need for a convenient city apartment to complement his large home in Hong Kong, and The Arch above Kowloon Station, with its proximity to shops and public transport, is right on the spot.

The design brief to designer Clifton Leung, was to spice up this 460 sq. ft. city apartment with more character, a design that is markedly different from the rest. The owner wanted to see the sea-view – all of it and from every angle. That included the view from the bathroom.

Clifton decided to demolish all the internal walls of the flat to impart an airiness, including the bathroom partitions, if privacy is needed, the bathroom can be enclosed by two translucent sliding doors meeting at right angles. The new layout embraces the dazzling sea view from all angles in the flat. LED lighting installed under the immense bay windows, in the living and sleeping areas accentuate the subdued elegance, more importantly, it sets the perfect mood for enjoying the sea view at night.

Inspired by Dubai’s Burj Al Arab Hotel, an eye-catching mirrored ceiling above the bed was installed. This exquisite design reflects the sea view and offers an interesting perspective of the exterior environment. It also makes the space appear bigger and taller.

A muted color palette with shades of beige are enlivened by copper mosaic tiles and a sandstone floor to create a tone echoing the design of hotel suites. The same wood veneer was applied throughout the flat to achieve a minimal and consistent look.

The open kitchen with a Corian-topped island is adorned with copper mosaic tiles, creating a cozy spot for food preparation and dining. All appliances such as fridge and washing machine are concealed in cabinets for a seamless integration of the kitchen into the overall living space. These banks of cabinets also cater for storage of clothing and bulky luggage to minimize clutter.

Clifton built a small open study with an angular glass work desk, an eye-catching piece with a graphic of an airplane wing on the top and a wheel on its sole leg.

In line with the designer’s philosophy of minimalism to maximization, everything is built-in apart from the few pieces of furniture. Close your eyes, you could be in a five-star hotel.
