If it's miserable out, close those drapes, get the fire going, and bring in some artificial sunlight with bursts of saturated yellow.

X-base ottomans look smashing in pairs, and I am particularly enjoying the way this designer played off the X-bases with that curvy X over the mantle.

This room is certainly not shy, adding yellow lampshades on both a floor lamp and sconces at the fireplace. The room just wouldn't be the same without this unexpected addition of color.

1. Introduce exciting color via lampshades. Cover them with fabric or paint paper shades in an unexpected color.

Contemporary furnishings; check. Eclectic accessories; check. Shag rug? Better believe it. Though texture is achieved in this room through the varied patterns, the shag rugs warms it up and creates a cozy, livable feel.

Pops of yellow draw the eye and add balance to the dramatic prints in this room.

There's no TV visible in this photo, but it's easy to imagine one on left wall, behind the white settee. Style and comfort are addressed equally in this setting. The collection of furniture — couch, daybed, footstools and chair — serve many purposes. The occasional chair, footstools and daybed indicate the room is often used to entertain guests. The daybed beckons for an afternoon nap or cozy evening reading before the fireplace, and the positioning of the couch is perfect for watching TV. The daybed with its low height and no back, allows for clear sight lines to the screen.

Repeating a pattern in the drapes and throw pillows save this room from pattern overload. Although the coved ceiling and the architectural details on the fireplace surround are far too fussy for my taste, I do like the furniture, the patterns on the drapes, and how the the soft brown patterns of the drapes are picked out in the shade of the flokati rug. I love the painting above the fireplace, and the cheery yellow accents in the room.
