is completely doable. In fact, most ancient ponds in Japanese gardens had to be fed by a local stream in order to work, and they had special techniques for doing this. One famous example of this is the pond system in Kinkakuji, or "Garden of the Golden Pavilion" in Kyoto, which is a World Heritage Site
