Likely pea gravel or possibly 5/8 minus crushed rock. Both easily available at your local bulk landscape supply store. Pea gravel is not great for walking on since it never compacts, but it also tends to inhibit weeds since it doesn't have the fines that fill in the pores.

Use river stones, either collected on walks or purchased from the garden store, and lay out a design — you can find many labyrinth designs with a quick online search. The best and easiest source is Home Depot . com. I purchased it in black for my grandaughter's platform bed and up the wall for her headboard. i've used it as wall covering also. Great stuff.
