Atherton Japanese Garden
It is most likely just the efforts of a good maintenance contractor using a lawn edger or weed eater. This photo was most likely taken just a day after mowed and edged.
Where the lawn is you could have some ground cover, no mowing and water wise.

I love this total design! I live in CT and have no idea where to find this type of oriental center piece. Congratulations on this blue ribbon creation!
my one area is like this and am taking out the lawn
Sometimes rock are better then lawns.
It's always interesting to see how Trex is used outside of decking! Kikuchi + Kankel Design Group used Trex as a divider for the pathway.
Japanese style in your garden. While Japanese gardens appear to be minimal and simple, every rock, sculpture, plant and path has been placed with great care. These elements inspire calm meditation when you're sitting and looking out at the garden and provide a very specific experience when you're walking

would love to see the interior and more of the exterior of this home.who is the builder or designer?
Sorry, I cannot share interior photos per the owners' request. The house was designed by award-winning architect and author, Sarah Susanka, who has written the 'Not So Big House' book series. The builder was John Steel of Stowe, Vermont.
The river rocks carefully arranged to evoke the flow of water is similar to the raked patterns in zen gardens. Ingenious twist.
Reminder re careful stone placement and juxtaposition

This is a stunning patio design. I love the cover, the varied deck levels, and the custom design that both complements and contrasts the house. I bet the owners spend many happy hours here.
