What type of plant is shown in the bottom of the picture?
I love the plants with purple spikes shown in the bottom of

Many of the trees in this photo are not 'bonsai' plants, with the exception of the pine tree. It is trimmed yearly to maintain its height
are not trimmed. Trimming of roots is a practice that is used mostly for plants in containers, not in the ground.
The plant in the foreground is Liriope muscari "Majestic" or Big Blue Lily Turf.
Also, make sure that the climate zone you live in is suitable for these plants as they are subject to frost damage.
