I think you could pull it off with a big splash of red...you might want to lighten up some of the other pieces in the room for contrast.

As for the door hardware - if you do go horizontally for those center 3 doors (which I think looks best) then use a minimum of an 8" pull. Smaller knobs or pulls will look awkward. 10" sounds like it would be perfect to me. The left set of 3 and right set of 3 should be mirror images of each other
