A lot of it is in the joinery. Mortise and tenon joints are excellent. Thicker wood helps. Of the lees expensive woods, Maple is used for its dimensional stability. But more exotic woods perform even better.
use of narrow area storage open staircase
The basement seems like a well-suited space for a man cave. A large footprint that may have been used for sporadic storage can be transformed to a modern and sleek room. The frosted glass, dark stained wood cabinets, and polished concrete floor are quite masculine in feel. Here a long and narrow floor
This room uses the same principle, but this time the furniture faces away from the pass-through area. You need a little wider room to do this. Keeping an open space to one side of the room effectively creates a hallway with the living areas

Color to use on ceilings as well as walls in basement
You definitely can paint your ceilings. Use the same color or a lighter shades of the color on your walls or even do an accent color, just don't go too dark because of your low ceilings. Ceilings are a big piece of the space and they have been ignored for years. It is the 5th wall! Decorate it! Here
The planks were supplied by the builders contractor and if I recall they were 1"x8". The color used was Sherwin Williams Oyster White.
Hi there - what is the color used on the planks of the wall? Also, where were the planks purchased from?
I would estimate about 6-7 feet. My kitchen island is 8 feet and I can fit 4 chairs across. This just has 3, though it seems to have a little extra space on the left side.

Interesting space with huge amounts of storage, which is always handy. Do you know what kind of hardware was on the pivoting bookshelves that conceal the cedar closet? Thanks
