Duncan Avenue Basement Renovation
Were there any changes made due to changing from unfinished basement to habitable space (fire rating, flamespread, etc)?
The space is a modern open kitchen/family room with high ceilings and a fire place at the far wall in the family room. Walls are cream color and I would like
Does painting the ceiling a dark color close in the space? What color
Pretty simple...just painted plywood cut flush with bottom of joist.
What about adding some kind of textile to the space, like a wall hanging, or even something hung across the ceiling? Something bright and vibrant, maybe something modern or "tribal"? I like the recliner
the perception of added height because it recedes and creates more depth above. A white painted ceiling tends to pull it towards you compacting the space. The owners were very happy with the result and we were thrilled with results.

How well does this space stay warm during the winter without ceiling insulation?
what is the space between the slats? thank you
The 1x3 wood slats are spaced at 3" on center. The space is 1/2". Thanks for your interest.
The bulkhead down the middle of the space conceals a steel beam, ductwork, heating hot water pipes and some wires. But, on the whole, we did not conceal the wires. We only minimized the wires

open concept, access to wires if neccary, transient spaces.
worth it to invest some of your basement budget into coverings (like the sleek horizontal wood panels shown here) that hide eyesores and help your space look really pulled together.

The main living space in the basement is light filled and has an open floor plan. To make the basement habitable, Bader and Mitanidis raised the ceiling height through a combination of two structural techniques: benching and underpinning. Benching involves pouring a new, deeper foundation inside the
the existing one, while underpinning means it gets poured underneath. Underpinning is much more expensive but doesn't take up any floor space, so they used it in tight areas, such as the powder room, and benched everywhere else.Chair: Poang, Ikea; open shelving: Lack, Ikea; pine shelving, coffee table:

They wanted a space that could handle a crowd of young children, provide lots of storage and was bright and colorful. The result is a beautiful space featuring custom cabinets, a kitchenette,

everything about it. Light filled, durable surfaces, room to spread out over multiple workstations, great storage, the dark band of shelving to unify the space. Fabulous.
Laundry craft space with island bench
long counters, open wall space, center island and pantry cabinet
Center table and counter space outer edges
table top and the counter space as well!
There are two workstations in the craft area, marked by counter space that wraps around two walls. Wall space is used for art display, storage and an accessible wrapping paper station. Casters on the island allow it to be moved right next to the countertops or placed in the center of the craft room.

shape basement and loved the concept of loft style. I'd like to get an idea of the square footage of this basement and also the cost (just to build the space). Thanks
The space is approximately 600 SF. Thanks for your interest.
Interesting idea to use this wall space for TV and A/V equipment
Putting the TV in the middle of the room lets a sofa go on the back right wall and helps split the space.
Not a full wall, but a nice divider between rooms; leaving it open especially if it is a small space.
Basement - hiding space for heater
a pristine living space. While the structural work on this space was intense, a simple palette and an emphasis on strong materials resulted in a clean and durable design.
