It's most likely LED tape lighting but I don't know the source. Hopefully the designer will answer this.

where are the lighting fixtures from
wouldn't necessarily look strange, but it might not be very good light, and if they protrude they might get in the way of the user. Why not choose a smaller mirror, or put an overhead sconce above the mirror? You can also do narrow pendant lights (hanging from the ceiling) that are just in front of the mirror
spacing around the frames for the sconces. Depending on the type of sconce and brightness, you want them to be sufficiently close to provide enough light to the face.
