Obviously underneath the teak is a shower pan or a slope towards the drain. Is the whole bathroom floor is covered by a membrane of some sort? I the rest of the floor raised?
It's most likely a wood grate floating over a recessed tiled floor with a drain below. Teak is a good wood for this sort of design, it's an oily wood that handles wet places better than most, but will still need to be cared for.

ways. I prefer using the Schluter Systems line of products for our showers and bathrooms- It's easy to work with and the support is wonderful. For a teak floor like this one shown, a more economical installation plan than a traditional mud pan with tile would be to utilize a pre-made stock solid surface
How do you keep the pan under the wood clean? Wouldn't mold and soap scum build up under the wood flooring?

Nice use of pebbles as accent. I thought that another good wood for this application would be teak. www.zenparadise.net
according to Bartok's website, "No, we will not make 45° mitered cuts...." In addition, the Ofuro pictured here is made of teak. Bartok clearly states, "We will not build a tub in teak or any other imported hardwood." This Ofuro came from Roberts Hot Tubs ( http://www.rhtubs.com ) and was featured in
Bear in mind that as a real Ofuro made from Hinoki wood, you should only wash OUTSIDE of it (as they do in Japan) ... if you get inside and use soap products or oils it will damage the wood long-term..
Make it look like it belongs by using "matching wood pieces"
If sinking down in hot water up to your chin is for you, then a soaking tub might be just the thing. You can get a beautiful one like this made from wood ...
