Where should I put candles?

When lit, candles can help set a mood, add extra lighting and bring warm, cozy scents to your home. Although they work well in every room, they are especially suited for bedrooms and outdoor patios, where minimal mood lighting is preferred over full-blown lamps and ceiling lights. To ward off stale air, scented candles in the kitchens and bathrooms are nice, but if you need something that packs a bigger punch, home fragrances, such as room sprays and reed diffusers, can do the trick.

What type of candleholder should I buy?

You can incorporate candles into your decor with even more style with the addition of a decorative candleholder. There are a wide variety of candle accessories to choose from, but regardless of the style, make sure you have candles that specifically fit that holder. Small votive holders work well for tea lights and votives, while tapers are specifically designed for candlesticks. Pillar candles are more flexible; you can use a regular candleholder, candle tray or plate, hurricane or lantern. In the end, be sure to use something that will catch any falling wax so you don’t ruin your furniture (though a hair dryer will get unwanted wax off in a cinch).

Are flameless candles right for me?

For those who want to avoid fire entirely, you’re in luck: A flameless candle is just as useful, and many come scented so you won’t have to miss out on fragrance. Some high-tech options even come with timers and remotes so you can easily control the on-off process. And some candles are so pretty that you don’t want to burn them at all, in which case you can just keep them as a permanent part of your decor.
