I am thinking of doing this to my stairs. Where does the carpet come together? Trying to figure out the best spot for the seam.
I don't really like the way the wrap around runner on the open stairs looks from below.

Yes, that is a door built-in to the wood paneling underneath the stairs. Good catch on the small knob, that is about the only way you can tell that there is a door.
you for your interest in our photo! Raised (or recessed) panel moulding can be created using several techniques depending on your desired look. For example to create this look you could use 5/4" x 6" birch wood to frame the raised panels, and then trim the inside edge of each square with cove moulding

Typically the paneling is added right on top of drywall. I have seen this done with solid wood (although rarely) but an edge-banded veneer would likely be the most common. A 1/4" veneer is applied to the entire wall with the rectangular panels added on top. It is not difficult to
