The floors in the main spaces of the house are original, vertical-grain Douglas Fir. We refinished them.

You're welcome. The MDF is applied in sheets directly to studs which are usually 16" on center. If battens are applied 8" on center, all the joints will be covered.

were built on either side of the fireplace! I am on a BUDGET here, but I have a fireplace and the walls are indented on either side of my fireplace---so shelves would make a natural focal point. I just don't know how! ARRGH!
