mistakes we see when homeowners develop gardens along the front of a residence is all of the plant material is placed inside the walkway. Most people will not even notice the plantings. When you pull the planting bed to the outside of the walkway as well, then your guests begin to walk "through" the garden
garden instead of along it. If you were to pull that birch to the outside of the walkway and plant it about 8' outside the walkway into the enlarged planting bed and light it with three LED uplights you begin to create a much more dramatic entry way.
Good input. My landscape architect recently explained that the River Birch, like many other trees can best be planted near a foundation or in lawns if they are protected by a root barrier. Apparently the root barrier helps the roots grow downward. This River Birch is certainly

what plants were added to this design since there are a lot of trees? Is this red lava rock on the ground?
site is actually in full sun most of the day. The photo was taken late in the day when the sun was starting to set, therefore casting a shadow on the plants.
