The dining table may act as the focal point of the dining room, but the chairs are where you’ll be sitting down to dinner for years to come. It’s imperative that they be as comfortable as they are stylish. Looking for sleek and sophisticated? Try metal chairs with upholstered seating. Going for the traditional? Consider classic Shaker chairs.

Before you buy, consider the following:

How do you determine the right size and amount? The size of your chairs should be in proportion to the shape of both your table as well as the dining room as a whole. Be sure to leave at least two feet of space around the table for pulling out chairs and about 2 1/2 feet of space for each chair. The depth of the chair may affect these measurements, so be sure to take that into consideration.

How do you make sure the seat height and width are appropriate? Measure from the underside of the table to the floor so you know exactly how much space you’re working with. This is especially important if you’re considering chairs with arms, as you want to be sure they are able to slide beneath the table.

Should you consider swapping chairs for a bench? Benches are a fun way to add a casual and interesting air to a dining table, plus they can often help squeeze in more seating. Try a traditional bench for a classic feel, or pull a settee style sofa up to the table for an unexpected addition. If storage is lacking in your dining room, go for a bench that comes complete with cabinet space beneath the seating.

What should you think about when considering wood chairs? Wood is the most common material used for dining chairs, coming in many different styles and complementary to a variety of tables. Windsor or slat-back chairs are classic and stylish choices, while a Parsons chair will add a contemporary flair. Be sure to note the construction of a wooden chair: good quality is key to avoiding warped and wobbly chairs in the future.

What other materials are available for chairs? In lieu of wood, consider metal, plastic, or wrought iron chairs for looks that can go more contemporary, retro or vintage. The biggest concern with these options is balancing style with comfort: consider adding upholstery or cushions so no one is itching to get out of the seats.

What type of upholstery should you choose? Comfort, quality and ease of maintenance are key factors when choosing dining chair upholstery. Cotton-polyester blends are the most common, and for good reason: they are durable and easy to clean. For kid-friendly chair fabrics, consider choosing fabrics made from microfiber for its stain-resistant quality. Leather is also a great call; not only is it durable and easy to maintain, but it looks better over time.

Our selection of dining chairs covers the traditional, the modern, the vintage and more.
