How much weight is the roof engineered to hold?
I'm no green roof expert, so take what I say with some skepticism. The goal is to keep your growing medium as light as possible. That's why I used lava rock for the
calculated additional weight for snow load. You'll have to research what kind of growing medium you'll need depending on what you intend to grow on the roof. Our mix was designed to grow sedum plants which like dry soils. As far as the footers/piers, I can't really comment too much on that b/c each part
slab!). And makes sense on the 3/4", I'd assumed that would be required with all the weight; seems like it's basically engineered like spanish tile roof? On the weight calculation - 2500 #s seems low to me? What is the growing medium? I've seen a lot of these designed with slate chunks and 4 inches

A properly designed green roof will also have a root barrier to stop plants from trying to root too deep. This homeowner elected to have his vegetable garden on the roof (perhaps to keep it safe from hungry animals).
There is no evidence to suggest that green roofs are more

luxury. Not only does it look beautiful, but it can actually improve your building's efficiency. Richard Cooke of Green Roof Asia says he always puts a drainage layer and filter fleece on the roof before installing a rooftop lawn. "Adding a lawn to your rooftop can act as a second waterproofing layer," he
he says. "A lawn reacts like a sponge, catching rain, and the absorption can actually help serve as an additional protective membrane between your roof and the interior below."
