The original kitchen cabinetry — a plain, off-white melamine — was replaced with a mix of high-gloss white laminate and stainless steel, with a touch of natural wood for warmth. Beaulieu and Carlo added an island from Ikea with stainless steel cabinet fronts for easy cleanup.

The Mud and Wood House
entering the room. The free heat is stored in the thermally massive mud walls and floor. Yes, the floor is earth too, sealed with layer upon layer of boiled linseed oil. The wall lights are moulded directly out of the mud walls. Photo: Steve Rogers
of the room was achieved at very little cost. We built the walls of mud, excavated from our site when we dug the foundations. The floor is also a mud floor, sealed with 7 layers of boiled linseed oil. The internal plaster is also made from the earth on site (and cow dung from a field across the road)
