Accessories and decor in some ways make the difference between a house and a home. Through the wide selection available to you, don’t be afraid to let your taste shine while keeping clutter at a minimum whenever possible.

Here are some decor ideas you can consider when you do your research:

What kind of space are you decorating for? Acknowledge the “weather patterns” of a specific room. Plants and easy-to-clean decor pieces such as glass bottles work nicely in a bathroom. Original artworks that are delicate and subject to deterioration may not be the best thing for a bathroom, however. You want something that will look great and last long. For outdoor areas or a kitchen, be sure to properly adapt your design choices to those surroundings.

Work the balance between decor and clutter. Sometimes empty space can be freeing, but too much of it can be cold and impersonal. Working with the presumption that your space can be a bit more homey as it stands, a couple decor accessories may convey a sense of style just as nicely as a large cluster of pieces. A starburst mirror or clock with a nice vase may be enough for some interior design enthusiasts, or a collection of empty frames to cover a blank wall may be the right fit for you. Decide accordingly and adapt your home maintenance (read: dusting) schedule to your accessories. Decor pieces that serve a function is a great start.

What are some decor ideas you can use? In the kitchen, colored glass bottles or jars can fill a space nicely. You can also make your kitchen and dining room more inviting with small elements such as coasters, fruit bowls, matching salt and pepper shakers and a table runner.

For your living room, you can also work with a nice fireplace screen and a decorative mantelpiece. A room divider can serve a stylish standalone piece of furniture. Look into little details such as decorative coat hooks, switch plates and door stops. You can also look into conversation pieces such as globes, trophy heads or decorative plates.

For your home office, add personable items such as paperweights, coffee table books and pottery that can be peppered along your desk or side table. Small topiary plants or lush green foliage can be great in any room.

These are just some ideas you can consider. Design items that elevate any utilitarian item to borderline art can be weaved into your style of decor.

Where can you decorate? Anywhere in your home! Even small corners or the ceiling can be decorated and accessorized. Some kitchens put collections of plants above the kitchen cabinets while wind chimes have become a standard for hanging balcony decor. Small stone statues have been put at the front doorstep and figurines have been placed by the TV or even the faucet. The possibilities are endless.
