you want to leave anywhere from 3" to 6" on either side of the runner. For 48" wide stairs you could use a 36" wide runner. WOW, that stairs runner is fantastic, nice decor and colour in general. Very inviting...
While I dont' really like THIS runner, I like the contrast of kind of traditional wooden chest/table with a funky rug. Also looking into the dining room I like the look of that table.
