wire brush is used to get 200 years of dirt off and get rid of some of the splinters. If you don't think a wire brush will work then maybe a palm sander (slow) or orbital with 220 grit and a light touch can clean things up pretty well.
brush part, i didn't get gentlysilvered boards for my cabinet but 200 year old boards, worried that wire brush will turn the outside ridges to dust!
