Even a 1/4" space between the hood edge & the cabinet, can prevent a lot of potential issues. Also, if you're going to have a backsplash that extends from the counter to the ceiling (such as in this photo), you might want to leave a bigger space - 1-2" - in order to avoid a "visual break" in the backsplash
