How did you attach the wire in a way that the edges aren't exposed?
Peggy, I am not the builder, however i am a designer builder and this appears to be weathered pine 2 X 8's , with 4 X 4 posts and chicken wire. The caps are either 2X6 or demensional 2X4 (actually 2" X 4" not the 1 1/2 X 3 1/2) It is very quaint... hope this helps :)
