what type of wood is the floor?
White Oak is very durable. A good quality engineered floor will let you site sand, stain, and finish just like a solid floor. Rift & Quartered is very beautiful. We just sent a 10" wide plank floor to another Houzz user. Here are some shots.

Yes it looks like maple or hickory. Both are very dense and hard woods that make an excellent floor.
