This planted area which is much longer than the section in the photo includes: Dwarf Miscanthus, Barrenwort, Chinese Fountain Grass, Daylily, Showy Stonecrop, Spring bulb mix, Hakone Grass, Painted Fern, White Liatris, Walker's Low Catmint and others. There are overlapping lines or mixed fields of
available as nursery stock so you can use it in all kinds of yards. The other looks like yellow cornflower (Rudbeckia fulgida), or the perennial black-eyed Susan. They have that slightly orange color a the base of the flower turning to yellow at the tips, and that's the dead giveaway for this plant
right. Both of these plants (assuming that's dwarf) would be about 2-2.5 feet tall at peak. Beautiful choices, and pretty unusual to put them together (black-eyed Susans are a favorite of old time gardens, so pretty interesting choice for a more modern setting — it definitely "works!").

The house numbers are from Details Hardware in LA. And the roll-up painted black metal garage door is from R&S Manufacturing (Oregon & California).

black is the new black :)
like coordinating trim color to body color, the eye is forced to focus on the design. When that design is a good modern one, the effect of an all-black exterior is minimalist and clean. Quite the wow factor.
