The L-shaped house mixes wood, glass and cement. A large wall of glass lets light flood into the living room and connects the space to the outdoors, but a wood-screened courtyard in front prevents it from feeling exposed to the street.

The home was built in 1957 for the Devney family. It remained in its original condition until it was sold to its second
level up. In this home the lower level "living" room off the entry was physically isolated from the dining, kitchen and family rooms above, and was only connected visually by a railing at dining room level. The owner desired a stronger integration of the lower and upper levels, in addition to an open flow

This was accomplished by creating a "reading room" at the entry level that responds to the front garden with a series of interior contours that are both steps as well as seating zones, while the orthogonal layout of the main level and deck reflects
reading room, experiencing it as a place, before moving up to the main level. At the entry, the second floor landing was opened up to create a double height space, with

Neatly trimmed greenery. Hedges that stay green through the winter are a godsend in cold climates — they can lend your home some much-needed freshness when everything else has withered. Even if you don’t have bushes planted in the ground, you can still add big pots
greenery in the large pots on patio?
I love little dormer built on top

That's great! We live in a 750sf one level home (30ft wide) in DC with a huge yard. We want to add on about 1700sf so I'm just trying to get an idea of what options we have. Thanks for getting back to me so fast.
All in all, the project worked well for us. We sold the property and recouped our investment, made a small profit and became neighborhood heroes for preventing a tear down and overs-scaled replacement. -Jim (j ARCHITECTS)
