Bettorf House & Flat, South Main, CO
In a project like South Main, density is key. Under 40 acres of the South Main project contain 250 lots, and 320 total dwelling units are planned. Underneath typical zoning constraints, this many units would have swallowed between 160 and 640 acres, not to mention extra miles of infrastructure like roads
contains a 2-bedroom income apartment on the first floor, and a 3- bedroom unit above. Because the town's population tends to double in the summer, South Main incorporates vacation rentals.

The house is just a short walk from the main residence, an 1890s cabin built during the region's copper, gold and silver boom. Although the main house was dramatically remodeled in 2001, it still retains its historic flavor. In building the new cottage, the owners were eager to do justice to both the
original building. By sinking the new structure into the hillside, they both diminished the cottage's presence on the site and preserved views from the main house above.

The kitchens, storage areas and utility rooms were traditionally on the ground-floor level. Raising the main level creates a separation between activities on the street- and
and main-level rooms, allowing the latter to have larger windows

Inspired by local fishing shacks and wharf buildings dotting the coast of Maine, this re-imagined summer cottage interweaves large glazed openings with simple taut-skinned New England shingled cottage forms. Photos by Tome Crane, c 2010.
The first home is in coastal Maine and resembles, on approach, a small Maine fishing village. From the waterside the home resembles a fishing village so much that it wouldn't be a surprise to see locals pull up in a boat to wander around, procuring a fresh lobster in the process.
