I do not know for sure as I was not involved in the design of this space, but it looks like soapstone. Soapstone is extremely heat resistant and stain resistant, so it is a good choice and is often used in fireplace surrounds. Just a thought.

Tim answered the second part of the question in that the rack is heated; he doesn't have a record of the specific supplier as there are so many on-line sources.

We add to that the heat that is created in the house just from people being there. (You’d be surprised at how much heat is generated from normal daily activities, like cooking, cleaning, using the computer and running all of the home appliances.)
