Are Venetian blinds right for me?
The most common and generally the least expensive type of blind, Venetian blinds feature horizontal slats that tilt up or down to control light. They offer superior privacy and a neat appearance. If you’re looking for a functional treatment that’s easy to maintain, blinds might be just what you need.
What styles of Venetian blinds are available?
Material and slat width are generally the differentiators between Venetian blind styles. Read on to learn what might work for you.
Vinyl Venetian blinds: Generally the least expensive option, vinyl blinds are lightweight but can be flimsy, bend easily and are usually available only in smaller slat sizes. However, they can be found in various colors and styles, including embossed designs or wooden tones, and they’re very durable.
Aluminum Venetian blinds: These are slightly more expensive than vinyl, however they’re of better quality while still being lightweight. They’re available in a large range of sizes, colors, and finishes, including metallic or soft suede.
Faux wood Venetian blinds: Available in one and two-inch sized slats, faux wood blinds imitate the real thing without warping, fading, or cracking. They are easy to clean and moisture resistant, but are more expensive and the heaviest horizontal window blind.
Real wood Venetian blinds: These are actually lighter in weight than faux wood, and will give your room a natural, organic feeling. While it will block considerable light, they’re likely the most expensive option.
Slat width: Depending on the material, Venetian blinds are generally available in slat widths ranging from an inch to three and a half inches. The wider the slat, the more light it will block. The thickness depends on your aesthetic preference.
What’s the difference between inside mount and outside mount Venetian blinds?
Inside mount and outside mount represent the two ways you can hang your blinds. Inside mount Venetian blinds sit within the recessed window frame so that the shades are flush with the wall, while outside mount Venetian blinds are hung outside of the frame on the wall and cover a larger area.
How do I determine the right size?
This depends on whether you’ve chosen inside or outside mount Venetian blinds. For inside mount, carefully measure the inside of the window frame from top to bottom and from left to right, as well as the depth of the window. For outside mount, measure from where you plan to hang the shade to where you'd like it to drop, and then measure from side to side. Add 2" at the top to allow for mounting brackets.
