correct, they are laid in different directions. This is a view from the front hallway through the kitchen into the back hallway. The vertical looking wood floor is the hallway, the horizontal wood is the kitchen / dining room and the tile is in the back hallway / entry to the home.

I love the pale neutral herringbone tile. This would be lovely in the entry hall that's open to the living room. I'd take it all the way through the entry and back into the kitchen.
