be end grain 4x4, but I highly doubt it. End grain cuts would not be durable enough even with a hardwood and not provide enough surface for toung and groove. 6x6 might work, but you'd still have the durability problem and splitting issues. I the past as a contractor, I have had many strange requests
assembled with grain traveling in different directions. We used an oil based poly to finish which added additional warmth and a surface not unlike a basketball court.
