Craft studio with lots of light
The upper cabin serves as a painting studio.
The upper cabin serves as an art studio.
Traditionally, northern light (in the Northern Hemisphere) was desirable for artist's studios, because the light would be diffuse rather than direct. In a sense, this mimics the conditions in galleries and
lighting. Site constraints mean that studios can't always take full advantage of north light, so maximizing any available light is ideal, such as in the case of this studio with windows and skylights.

I am hoping to build a studio in Utah in a wooded (and very snowy in winter) location but have assumed it would have to be in a loft area of the house rather than the basement or separate building because of the temps. How do you stay warm very cold weather?
Hi, This is Elise, the artist who's studio is pictured. This studio is attached to my home but on a different heating zone.....it is a propane heating system and the heat comes out of those tubular silver ducts which are near the track lights. I only turn the heat up when I am working
..just keeping it high enough so that pipes don't freeze when I am not. since this is a partial two story space that part not pictured, the upper studio does stay warmer because heat rises....you may want to consider a fan as well in a double height structure such as this. Hope this helps!
