This warm and inviting space has great industrial flair. We love the contrast of the black cabinets, plumbing fixtures, and accessories against the bright warm tones in the tile. Pebble tile was used as accent through the space, both in the niches in the tub and shower areas as well as for the backsplash behind the sink. The vanity is front and center when you walk into the space from the master bedroom. The framed medicine cabinets on the wall and drawers in the vanity provide great storage. The deep soaker tub, taking up pride-of-place at one end of the bathroom, is a great place to relax after a long day. A walk-in shower at the other end of the bathroom balances the space. The shower includes a rainhead and handshower for a luxurious bathing experience. The black theme is continued into the shower and around the glass panel between the toilet and shower enclosure. The shower, an open, curbless, walk-in, works well now and will be great as the family grows up and ages in place.

Tomecek Studio ArchitectureTomecek Studio Architecture
Photography by Braden Gunem Project by Studio H:T principal in charge Brad Tomecek (now with Tomecek Studio Architecture). This project questions the need for excessive space and challenges occupants to be efficient. Two shipping containers saddlebag a taller common space that connects local rock outcroppings to the expansive mountain ridge views. The containers house sleeping and work functions while the center space provides entry, dining, living and a loft above. The loft deck invites easy camping as the platform bed rolls between interior and exterior. The project is planned to be off-the-grid using solar orientation, passive cooling, green roofs, pellet stove heating and photovoltaics to create electricity.

Photo by Alan Tansey This East Village penthouse was designed for nocturnal entertaining. Reclaimed wood lines the walls and counters of the kitchen and dark tones accent the different spaces of the apartment. Brick walls were exposed and the stair was stripped to its raw steel finish. The guest bath shower is lined with textured slate while the floor is clad in striped Moroccan tile.

"Amplified" Tiny House
"Amplified" Tiny House
Asha MevlanaAsha Mevlana
Who lives there: Asha Mevlana and her Havanese dog named Bali Location: Fayetteville, Arkansas Size: Main house (400 sq ft), Trailer (160 sq ft.), 1 loft bedroom, 1 bath What sets your home apart: The home was designed specifically for my lifestyle. My inspiration: After reading the book, "The Life Changing Magic of Tidying," I got inspired to just live with things that bring me joy which meant scaling down on everything and getting rid of most of my possessions and all of the things that I had accumulated over the years. I also travel quite a bit and wanted to live with just what I needed. About the house: The L-shaped house consists of two separate structures joined by a deck. The main house (400 sq ft), which rests on a solid foundation, features the kitchen, living room, bathroom and loft bedroom. To make the small area feel more spacious, it was designed with high ceilings, windows and two custom garage doors to let in more light. The L-shape of the deck mirrors the house and allows for the two separate structures to blend seamlessly together. The smaller "amplified" structure (160 sq ft) is built on wheels to allow for touring and transportation. This studio is soundproof using recycled denim, and acts as a recording studio/guest bedroom/practice area. But it doesn't just look like an amp, it actually is one -- just plug in your instrument and sound comes through the front marine speakers onto the expansive deck designed for concerts. My favorite part of the home is the large kitchen and the expansive deck that makes the home feel even bigger. The deck also acts as a way to bring the community together where local musicians perform. I love having a the amp trailer as a separate space to practice music. But I especially love all the light with windows and garage doors throughout. Design team: Brian Crabb (designer), Zack Giffin (builder, custom furniture) Vickery Construction (builder) 3 Volve Construction (builder) Design dilemmas: Because the city wasn’t used to having tiny houses there were certain rules that didn’t quite make sense for a tiny house. I wasn’t allowed to have stairs leading up to the loft, only ladders were allowed. Since it was built, the city is beginning to revisit some of the old rules and hopefully things will be changing. This 1600+ square foot basement was a diamond in the rough. We were tasked with keeping farmhouse elements in the design plan while implementing industrial elements. The client requested the space include a gym, ample seating and viewing area for movies, a full bar , banquette seating as well as area for their gaming tables - shuffleboard, pool table and ping pong. By shifting two support columns we were able to bury one in the powder room wall and implement two in the custom design of the bar. Custom finishes are provided throughout the space to complete this entertainers dream.

We took a small damp basement bathroom and flooded it with light. The client did not want a full wall of tile so we used teak to create a focal point for the mirror and sink. It brings warmth to the space.

We basically squeezed this into a closet, but wow does it deliver! The roll out shelf can expand for folding and ironing and push back in when it's not needed. The wood shelves offer great linen storage and the exposed brick is a great reminder of all the hard work that has been done in this home! Joe Kwon

Jacob Hand; Our client purchased a true Chicago loft in one of the city’s best locations and wanted to upgrade his developer-grade finishes and post-collegiate furniture. We stained the floors, installed concrete backsplash tile to the rafters and tailored his furnishings & fixtures to look as dapper as he does.

We turned this large 1950's garage into a personal design studio for a textile designer and her team. We embraced the industrial aesthetic of the space and chose to keep the exposed brick walls and clear coat the concrete floors. The natural age and patina really came through. - Photography by Anne Simone
