are glulams but the species of wood is Douglas Fir. We stained them with Cabot's water-based stain. I believe the color was black or ebony. Please let us know if you have other questions. All the best, Heather
weight, a typical 10" block got us around R-20 so no need for extra insulation and because water will only penetrate 2" into the block it doesn't need waterproofing (the product needs to breathe).
