Unlike an adult bedroom, where relaxation is key, a kids’ bedroom is constantly full of energy. A children’s room needs to be equipped to handle any and all activities, including sleeping, coloring, doing homework, roughhousing with friends and playing with toys. Accommodating so much can be a challenge, especially when so many bedrooms are far from spacious. To find room for the mini table and chairs, dresser, toy chest and kids’ bed, some serious organization needs to take place; even nurseries, with their changing table, baby swing, cribs and rocking chair, can be quite daunting. Make everything fit by strategically filling every inch with just-right furniture pieces for the right price. More

Place furniture along the room’s perimeter.

In a kids’ room, the floor is valuable play space, so avoid taking up too much of it by setting furniture against the walls. Dressers, toy chests and kids’ beds or cribs are easy, but leave a little extra space for a rocking chair or glider. Don’t forget about using your wall, either; wall organizers are great for storing things, and tall cubbies make use of vertical space. For the child who loves to roll around on the floor, find a kid-friendly rug that’s colorful, fun and, above all, easy to spot clean and wash.

Use plenty of baskets, bins and boxes for toy storage.

Those toys can easily get out of hand, so prevent a pileup by keeping baskets and boxes handy. Wood or plastic storage bins in built-in cubbies are a great way to stay organized, and toy chests make cleanup a breeze. To make your job easier, teach your child what goes where and get him or her to help out when it’s time to put toys away.

Create a child-friendly workspace.

Whether they’re doing their homework, painting a picture or building a new toy, children need a sturdy surface for work and play. Invest in a kid-friendly table and chairs, and keep the space clean by placing organizers nearby to house crafts and office supplies.

Bring in fun, kid-friendly colors.

By nature, a kids’ room should be full of bright, vibrant colors, so use playful bedding, curtains, rugs and paint to get there. Stuffed animals and oversize pillows make a room feel cozier, and mobiles and wall decals are great accessories for either a child's room or a nursery. If your child is old enough, have him or her help pick the colors (and don’t worry so much if they clash).

Buy furniture that will last.

Children grow up way too fast, but make sure they don’t outgrow their furniture as fast as they outgrow their clothes. Although you want to avoid furniture that’s too big, some pieces, especially organizers, should last throughout childhood. Despite its size, a smaller dresser should have sufficient space from infancy to the middle school years, and storage containers for toys and accessories shouldn’t be a problem. If you buy durable, quality furniture the first time, you will likely save money in the long run and reuse it if and when any siblings come along.
