How are the spices lasting so close to the heat of the oven?
I like this idea but it seems like storing the spices so close to the heat of the oven would not be a good idea. How are the spices surviving the heat? How long have you been storing them like this?

I do not know for sure as I was not involved in the design of this space, but it looks like soapstone. Soapstone is extremely heat resistant and stain resistant, so it is a good choice and is often used in fireplace surrounds. Just a thought.
