4" on a filler, why not make it a smidge wider, say 6", and then you can use it to store trays, cookie sheets, etc - just slide them in, and if you need to, it's easy to add a skinny swinging door. Every inch in the kitchen should count, imo!
usually a 'cummy' piece that doesn't need to be deeper than 6" or so. you could however specify a full gable on the fridge side if you feel you want more insulation happening....

Hi Una, Actually I just go by what the homeowner wants, there is no real science. I can offer this however, use a swivel back barstool if you have a great room/family room adjacent to the kitchen. You might want to swivel around to see TV and participate in conversation
