There is no stain and we used 3 coats of Vermister which is a water based finish. I don't know where if the country you are but we are in Seattle and can no longer get the Vermister so we are currently using a water based finish by a manufacturer called Glitsa. Good luck. Fir is beautiful.

is there any overhang on the base cabinets (not the island?) 1/8 inch?
just right, and while the wood seats are similar in coloration to the brown cabinets and light fixture, the movement in the wood and the blackened steel bases give them distinction, making them stand apart.

The cabinets were custom made by a local shop. They used horizontal grain walnut and stainless steel toe kicks.
If we go with a light wood kitchen, stainless steel base board is nice. Also, Luke likes the the book shelf on the end.
