A dryer can not be placed flat against a wall because of the vent hose and a washer almost always has the water knob behind or above it slightly which is an eyesore itself. joints instead of modern glued pvc. Later repair means opening walls. Water filters under sinks or whole house is a breeze now too. If you're all electric, like we are, you might look into a backup generator. We're fairly rural, and our water relies on an electric pump. I also freeze food from the garden

look at comments and question about vent and water connections
if we move the hot water heater into the garage we could do this wall in the laundry room... nice!
A portion of the countertop lifts off to expose piping, vent duct, etc. and there is enough room to access/disconnect the water supply and hose connections.
