The are decorative not functional. Part of the original railroad tie.
It is actually some old railroad trestles that were purchased outside of Salem, OR. The homeowner found it and I do not have the details of the purchase but it was a salvage yard or reclaimed timber yard.
handled that end of it ... I just know it was prepped before it was delivered. I would suggest talking to a wood expert - someone that deals with reclaimed wood. Good luck!
