loop or braid vs. a cut pile to me. I know Restoration Hardware ( chunky wool braided rug) has something that looks like this with the light cream color as an option. Probably not the same rug, but something to compare to. BTW, it is super soft and cushy under foot, but that's probably pretty obvious
