Can you tell me anything about the bookcases on either side of the fireplace? Are they custom and if so what wood was used?

I have a lot of wood in my house; wall panels and floor and kitchen, and i want to keep it. What could I do to update the look a little and add a shabby Chic feel?
Beautiful room, in fact I'm doing the exact same thing at my place. One last detail I have to figure out is the material. Some suggest PVC and others real wood...what do you suggest? Thanks for your advise.

I like the clean lines of the fireplace (black steel and glass). I have almost the same surround (1950's, white painted brick) but open wood burning. I would like to retain the look, but update to a high efficiency wood burning insert or similar. Is that a gas or wood unit
