The shelves are free floating. The carpenters used long lag bolts - they cut off the heads of the bolts, inserted them into the wall, drilled holes in the 2" shelves, put epoxy in those holes and slid the boards onto the lag bolts. The shelves sit about 1/2 inch off the wall. Hope that helps
There is icynene - a spray foam insulation - behind the boards of the ceiling. It is great insulation for a home in a high fire area as it does not require venting.
