Some builders use Faux beams and some use real wood beams for looks and structural support

They are in fact hollowed out beams with fixtures inside. They are to code. Another approach is to build a hollow
the first question is actually "YES". It did take extensive drilling, or wood removal of some type that creates a hole. It certainly didn't grow that way

They are by Velux and there are only 2 of them, between last beam and exterior wall
