where do i find terrra cotta outdoor floor tile to mimic a carpet?
Is your location subject to freeze/thaw cycles. If not, then I'd recommend using cement tiles. Cement tiles can be customized and there are more options than with glazed terra cotta.
We carry Avente Tile as well as other lines if you are close by San Luis Obispo or you can call us and order what
from the Moors and continues in Spanish-influenced gardens today.

Even though we can't do tiles here, because of winters, this makes my heart sing!

How do tiles on a staircase not move, shift, or crack over time and wear?
This is not tile- it is a material called magnasite which was used 1920-1950 in spanish colonial and mediterranean revival style homes. It is a composite material which is poured like concrete then shaped and scored to look like tile or stone.
Did PaveTile also make the stair treads? Hard to tell

Do you still have the tile?
I ordered some cement tile similar to this from Granada Tile but was unable to use it (change of plan!). It's the Badajoz design in black and white like the one in this kitchen: http://www.jhinteriordesign.com/alhambra-kitchen/ Granada Tile will sell it to you for less than I paid
