These raised beds are constructed with 4x4 posts at corners and mid spans. They are on the inside of the beds and the outer 2x6 boards are carriage bolted to them. They were all custom built by the landscape contractor on the project.
forget to put wire mesh on the bottom to protect from gophers (if you have them in your area)!
This is how wooden planter boxes would look...painted grey even. I would want those boxes to be twice as tall as those. Possibly, slightly varying heights to add a tiered look of the garden.

its good to have a second sprayer of pure water to wash off any accidental overspray that gets on desired plants. For crushed rock areas, if you install 3" thick and compact, you usually have very few weeds.

the kids to play on all in a very small back yard! It was a challenge but all was accomplished with beautiful results. In fact, this project is featured in the 2009 Fall issue of Luxury Pools Magazine

The vine to the left is a Ficus pumila
soil? To protect against harsh sun exposure, it is best to remove cushions when not using them as fabrics can fade, especially darker ones. To protect from dirt consider using lawn furniture covers when not in use. (These could also be used to protect against the sun- but some fading could still occur)

idea for how to use a niche or small space
This takes a very small outdoor space to 'oasis' level. Perfect for our small Scottish gardens. This could be used as a selling point for an otherwise less desirable property (Kirk Wynd?)
