This artistic and design-forward family approached us at the beginning of the pandemic with a design prompt to blend their love of midcentury modern design with their Caribbean roots. With her parents originating from Trinidad & Tobago and his parents from Jamaica, they wanted their home to be an authentic representation of their heritage, with a midcentury modern twist. We found inspiration from a colorful Trinidad & Tobago tourism poster that they already owned and carried the tropical colors throughout the house — rich blues in the main bathroom, deep greens and oranges in the powder bathroom, mustard yellow in the dining room and guest bathroom, and sage green in the kitchen. This project was featured on Dwell in January 2022.

1950s bathroom photo in San Francisco

This home, which was originally built in 1960, is a classic example of Mid-Century Modern Design. Over the years, the home had fallen into disrepair. The clients, who had recently purchased the home, approached Pelletier+Schaar because they wanted to upgrade and modernize the bathroom, master and laundry as well as add an expanded deck with a covered portion while simultaneously maintaining the aesthetics characteristic of mid-century modern design.

By removing the existing his and her closets from the master bathroom and annexing space from the laundry room, we were able to design in separate tub and showers to fit into the space. White tile with a distinct midcentury pattern on it clads (2) full walls and lightens up the space. The sleek undermount tub with white quartz top is beautiful in its simplicity and is balanced out by the walnut skirt panels that are easily removed by touch latches. The master bathroom has a freestanding tub in a wet room shower. Black hexagonal floor tiles give a geometric pattern to the space. Frosted glass provides a modern touch of privacy.
