Custom built-ins designed to hold a record collection and library of books. The fireplace got a facelift with a fresh mantle and tile surround.

This space was previously closed off with doors on two sides, it was dark and uninviting to say the least. This family of avid readers needed both a place for their book collection and to move more freely through their home.

We made sure no heavy furnishings blocked a bit of the natural light in this sun-filled side of the apartment. Building On Favorites: Rebecca describes her fashion aesthetic as “sexy tomboy,” and her interior style has the same DNA. She doesn’t go overtly feminine or traditional (she had zero interest in chintz). Rebecca dreamed of achieving true comfort and a warm modernism for her family’s home, which meant the design bull’s-eye for this project was anything in the midcentury vein, anything made in radiant woods, anything that had striking, Pop-y contrasts or the ability to layer beautifully. Huge mid-century modern open concept dark wood floor and brown floor living room library photo in Other with gray walls, a standard fireplace, a wood fireplace surround and a concealed tv

This family room went from ultra shabby to super chic! Before the renovation the floors were a worn, dated parquet. We replaced the parquet flooring with a warm chocolate glazed birch hardwood. The fireplace surround was a dreary white painted brick which we refaced with a copper metallic porcelain tile. The preexisting built-ins were completely demolished as they were oversized and out of date. We designed more contemporary and functional custom built-ins for the space, adding some square footage to the room as well. The textures in the room-dark wood, copper toned tile, plush velvet and soft leather-all contribute to the warm and cozy feel of the space. Photographer: Paul S. Bartholomew
